We’d like to introduce you to Susan Tiley, a Meemic Foundation donor with a great story. Susan lives in Clinton Township, MI, and was looking for a way to support her community.

“I believe in the school system, and it is so important to support them,” she says. “Especially, since I know that the schools do not always have the money that they would like to have to provide all of the things that they would like to for their students. The school budget is just too small.  Some teachers are actually buying things with their own money in order to give their students the best education that they can give them.”

As a Meemic policyholder, she was familiar with the Foundation and its goals and decided to reach out and become a donor, but with a twist. She was hoping her monthly donation could go to a specific local school district: Chippewa Valley.

“I felt it was important to give back to the community where I live,” she says. “I was so surprised that The Meemic Foundation gave me the choice of where I could put my funds. A lot of nonprofits do not give you that option.”

Since she started donating in 2020, Susan has visited the school that became the recipient of her donations in Chippewa Valley, Erie Elementary, and had a chance to meet the principal and teachers. Her donation is being used to purchase activity guides for their “Leader in Me” program for all third-grade students.

“That was wonderful, especially since all of the people there really loved that I was there and loved my input,” she says. “It was amazing that at such a young age, Erie Elementary has started teaching students regarding college and the real world.”

Susan has had a long career in education. She started out working for a preschool and later switched to working in various college administrative support roles. She recently retired from Oakland University, from which she also recently received her bachelor's degree in integrative studies, nonprofit organizations.

As Susan so passionately states, “Teaching is one of the most important jobs in the country, yet we do not give enough to support those that are preparing our children for the future. In case you did not notice, I have a large heart for giving and caring about others.

“Even though the amount I give to the schools is a small amount, I realized a long time ago that people can make a difference even when doing small acts of kindness. Sometimes the small things make a bigger difference than we think they do.”
