In a video blog, 2023-24 Michigan Teacher of the Year Candice Jackson talks about the importance of diversity and culturally responsive teaching practices.

Phrases like “I don’t see color” may leave an unintended impression on students. Recognizing and valuing students’ diverse backgrounds and cultures will help create a learning environment where every student feels represented, respected and engaged in learning.

She offers a few tips on how to make that happen through adapting teaching methods, curriculum and classroom practices to be more inclusive in Black History Month and beyond.
 

2023-24 Michigan Teacher of the Year Candice Jackson is a third-grade teacher and instructional coach at Mann Learning Community in Detroit Public Schools Community District. She's been in the Detroit district since 2002 and at Mann since 2017.
