Candle Safety


A burning candle adds special warmth to any room but, with any open flame, there are some concerns. The number one concern when dealing with candles is leaving a burning candle unattended. An open flame can be unpredictable and you should always have an adult present to address any potential safety situation.

Be sure to respect candles and follow these simple tips to minimize the risks:

  • Always keep a burning candle in sight, never near anything that can catch fire.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Trim candlewicks to 1⁄4 inch each time before burning.
  • Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use.
  • Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris.
  • Always carefully follow manufacturer use and safety instructions.
  • Keep candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents.
  • Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible place in your home.

Candles can create a wonderful ambiance if you treat them with the respect they deserve. Remember, they are still an open flame. If you are unable to follow the guidelines listed above, consider using a battery operated candle instead.
